font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span lang=\"it-IT\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ffff99;\">Giovanni<\/span> imbarc\u00f2 sulla nave Rochambeau a Le Havre (Francia) il 04\/11\/1912 a l&#8217;et\u00e0 di 16 anni <\/span><span lang=\"it-IT\">(*) per lavorare <\/span><span lang=\"it-IT\">vicino<\/span><span lang=\"it-IT\"> Johnstone (<em>Pensilvania<\/em>). <\/span><span lang=\"it-IT\">Era con suo fratello <strong>Cirillo<\/strong> (1890\/1926) e sul documento di bordo \u00e8 scritto che andavano a trovare il cugino <span style=\"color: #ffff99;\"><strong>Federico Baroldi <\/strong><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"it-IT\">a South Fork (PA)<\/span><span lang=\"it-IT\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #808080; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><em>Federico Baroldi \u00e8 stato registrato come &#8220;Fedarico Baroldi&#8221; il 13\/03\/1905 arrivando da Southampton sulla nave New York<\/em><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #808080; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"background-color: #000000; color: #ccffff;\"> Tutti gli antenati di Favrio emigrati negli Usa si sono ritrovati in questa citta, principalmente per lavorare <\/span><\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span lang=\"it-IT\" style=\"color: #808080; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"background-color: #000000; color: #ccffff;\">nelle miniere di ferro di Mineral Point.<\/span><\/span><br \/><iframe style=\"border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m14!1m8!1m3!1d97339.3160182607!2d-78.9054486!3d40.323406!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x89cb0d7f00e8062b%3A0x24c781563a320779!2sMineral+Point%2C+Pennsylvania+15942%2C+Stati+Uniti!5e0!3m2!1sit!2sfr!4v1484151519162\" width=\"100%\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p><p lang=\"it-IT\"><span style=\"color: #808080; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Incontr\u00f2 poi <span style=\"color: #ffff99;\"><strong>Maria Amistadi<\/strong><\/span> di Riva del Garda anche lei migrante del 1907 e si sposarono, ebbero 2 figlie\u00a0: <strong>Lily<\/strong> (1919-2016) e <strong>Ada<\/strong> (1923-2017).<\/span><\/p><p lang=\"it-IT\"><span style=\"color: #808080; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Della famiglia di Giovanni le raggiunse (<em>il 01\/10\/1923 sulla nave President Wilson<\/em>) sua sorella <strong>Olimpia<\/strong>\u00a0e <strong>Mansueto Modesto Cherotti<\/strong> (1885\/1968), marito della sua sorella <strong>Liduina Cornelia<\/strong> (1888\/1959). Per Modesto era la seconda volta che ci andava poich\u00e9 imbarc\u00f2 una prima volta nel 1905.<\/span><\/p><p lang=\"it-IT\"><span style=\"color: #808080; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 Sempre nel 1923 (<em>20\/11\/1923 sulla nave Presidente Wilson<\/em>), giunse <strong>Massimino Igigno Vaia<\/strong> (1891\/1980) padre di <strong>Mario<\/strong> che sposer\u00e0 la figlia di sua sorella Liduina\u00a0e di Mansueto; <strong>Caterina<\/strong>,<\/span><\/p><p lang=\"it-IT\"><span style=\"color: #808080; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 Albino Giovanni, come le sue due figlie rimase negli Usa dove morr\u00ec. Lily quando mi parlava diceva che era del Tirolo, mai dell&#8217;Italia. Parlava un p\u00f2 il \u00ab Tirolese \u00ab\u00a0 con un accento stretto. Una cosa che mi ha marcato \u00e8 che durante la seconda guerra mondiale, faceva il lavoro dell&#8217;impiegata che si vede nel film di Spielberg \u00ab Salvate il soldato Ryan \u00bb quella che scrive le lettere di condoglianze alle famiglie delle vittime.<\/span><\/p><p lang=\"it-IT\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; color: #808080;\"><em>(*) Quando gli immigranti giungevano a Long Island (New York), dovevano subire la quarantena ed erano registrati dal personale locale che non parlava Italiano, si pu\u00f2 immaginare la difficolt\u00e0 di trascrivere i dati degli immigranti che oltretutto parlavano solo il dialetto. Ho visto documenti in cui il cognome Vaia \u00e8 diventato Vais, Baroldi diventato Beroldi, Paolo diventa Parlo, ecc.. ci\u00f2 spiega forse perch\u00e9 Giovanni che in realt\u00e0 aveva 14 anni di et\u00e0 e non 16 come trascritto sul documento, si pu\u00f2 anche presumere che ment\u00ec sulla sua et\u00e0 per potere lavorare non avendo l&#8217;et\u00e0 minima.<\/em><\/span><\/p><p lang=\"it-IT\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; color: #808080;\"><em>\u00a0 \u00a0 Ricordiamoci che all&#8217;epoca Favrio era ancora austriaco \u00e8 sembra singolare che gli immigranti non possedessero documenti di identit\u00e0\u2026 Sar\u00e0 l&#8217;oggetto di un&#8217;altra ricerca,<\/em><\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><a style=\"color: #00ccff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.asucfavrio.it\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Relationship_-Federico-Rafaele-Baroldi-to-Albino-Giovanni-Franceschi.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vedi il legame di parentela fra <em>Albino <strong>Giovanni Franceschi<\/strong><\/em> e <strong><em>Federico Rafaele Baroldi<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"color: #ffcc00; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt; background-color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Ellis Island, l&#8217;isola delle lacrime<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h3><p lang=\"it-IT\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; color: #808080; font-size: 14pt;\"><b>\u00a0 \u00a0L&#8217;arrivo in America<\/b><b>\u00a0era caratterizzato dal trauma dei controlli medici e amministrativi durissimi, specialmente ad\u00a0<\/b><i>Ellis Island, l&#8217;Isola delle Lacrime<\/i><b>.<\/b><\/span><\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #808080; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><i>&#8230;s<\/i><em>ono 3000, sono arrivati, sono tutti sulla banchina, stanchi, affamati, con in mano il libretto rosso; (che li bolla come analfabeti) o il foglio giallo che d\u00e0 qualche maggiore speranza; ma per tutti c&#8217;\u00e8 ora la quarantena, un attesa lunga, snervante speranza, \u00a0indebitati per fare il viaggio, non \u00e8 solo stressante ma \u00e8 un&#8217;attesa angosciante<\/em><\/span><\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #808080; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">(da un cronista dell&#8217;epoca \u2013 1920)<\/span><\/em><\/p><hr \/><h3>\u00a0<\/h3><h3><span style=\"color: #ffcc00; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>1. L&#8217;emigrazione italiana<\/strong><\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #808080; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Gli italiani all\u2019estero secondo le stime del Ministero degli affari esteri erano nel 1986 <b>5.115.747<\/b>, di cui il 43 per cento nelle Americhe e il 42,9 in Europa. L\u2019entit\u00e0 delle collettivit\u00e0 di origine italiana ammonta invece a\u00a0<b>decine di milioni<\/b>, comprendendo i discendenti degli immigrati nei vari paesi. Al primo posto troviamo l\u2019Argentina con 15 milioni di persone, gli Stati Uniti con 12 milioni, il Brasile con 8 milioni, il Canada con un milione e l\u2019Australia con 540.000 persone.\u00a0Come si spiegano questi dati? Si spiegano con il fatto che\u00a0<u>gli italiani sono stati protagonisti di uno dei pi\u00f9 grandi esodi migratori della storia moderna<\/u>. &#8220;Nell\u2019arco di poco pi\u00f9 di un secolo, a partire dal 1861, sono state registrate pi\u00f9 di ventiquattro milioni di partenze, un numero quasi equivalente all\u2019ammontare della popolazione al momento dell\u2019Unit\u00e0&#8221;. Tale fenomeno interess\u00f2 tutte le regioni italiane, non soltanto il sud d\u2019Italia.<\/em><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; color: #808080; font-size: 14pt;\"><em>\u00a0 \u00a0 A fine Ottocento, la traversata verso l&#8217;America si presentava carica di incognite e di imprevisti fin dal luogo di imbarco, fosse esso il porto di Genova, di Marsiglia o altri scali di paesi europei affacciati sull&#8217;Atlantico. Ritardi e disfunzioni delle compagnie di navigazione, documentazione insufficiente, cavilli burocratici costringevano a lunghe, snervanti e talora inutili attese. Il viaggio, poi, si presentava spesso molto disagiato, nell&#8217;affollamento e nella promiscuit\u00e0 della terza classe. Appena sbarcati, gli emigrati venivano rinchiusi per la &#8216;quarantena&#8217; in apposite strutture ricettive: tra le pi\u00f9 note, ricordiamo Ellis Island a New York e l&#8217;Hotel des Immigrantes a Buenos Aires. I nuovi arrivati venivano accuratamente visitati dai medici, registrati, interrogati ed esaminati dagli ispettori governativi.<\/em><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; color: #808080; font-size: 14pt;\"><em><br \/>Meno traumatici, ma ugualmente disorganizzati e privi di adeguata assistenza pubblica, erano gli spostamenti degli emigranti temporanei o stagionali verso i paesi europei.<br \/><\/em><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; color: #808080; font-size: 14pt;\"><em>\u00a0 \u00a0 Le cose migliorarono nel corso del Novecento: nel secondo dopoguerra, ad esempio, le numerose partenze di Veneti verso le lontane mete canadesi o australiane vennero regolamentate e organizzate in maniera precisa: si partiva con tutti i certificati e i documenti in regola e non si andava pi\u00f9 all&#8217;avventura, anche se molto dipendeva ancora dallo spirito d&#8217;iniziativa e dalle capacit\u00e0 individuali.<\/em><i> <\/i><\/span><\/p><h3 class=\"western\" lang=\"it-IT\"><span style=\"color: #ffcc00; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">OTTOBRE 1912: relazione dell\u2019Ispettorato per l\u2019Immigrazione al Congresso Americano sugli immigrati italiani negli Stati Uniti.<\/span><\/h3><p lang=\"it-IT\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #808080; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><a style=\"color: #808080;\" name=\"more-21979\"><\/a> Generalmente sono di piccola statura e di pelle scura.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #808080; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Non amano l\u2019acqua, molti di loro puzzano perch\u00e9 tengono lo stesso vestito per molte settimane.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #808080; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Si costruiscono baracche di legno ed alluminio nelle periferie delle citt\u00e0 dove vivono, vicini gli uni agli altri.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #808080; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Quando riescono ad avvicinarsi al centro affittano a caro prezzo appartamenti fatiscenti.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #808080; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Si presentano di solito in due e cercano una stanza con uso di cucina. Mother of Mary Martha (J.Anthony) Brown, Martin (Mary Ann), Kristen (Barbara), Kevin (Karen) and sister to Ada Gomilar. Lily is survived by10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #808080; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Lily was born on Dec. 20, 1919 to John and Mary Franceschi. Her parents were from Austria, present day Northern Italy. Her father was a coal miner and her mother was a housewife. They spoke Italian which Lily could speak and understand, but she was to learn English and help them. They settled in Carpenter&#8217;s Park, PA where her mother took in coal miner borders which was common in those times. Her sister Ada was born in 1921. She attended Conemaugh Twp. Elementary School until 1934, then Johnstown High School graduating with honors in 1938. She next went to Cambria Rowe Business College receiving an Associates Degree in 1939. She was baptized (1933) and confirmed (1934) Roman Catholic at St. Peter&#8217;s Church in Somerset, PA.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #808080; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">During the Johnstown Flood in the 1930&#8217;s she stayed in a high rise apartment building with a classmate down town as she could not get home. During that time she learned to drink her coffee black, something she did all her life. She began her professional career as a secretary to Atty. Reginal Parsons in Johnstown, PA.She had already met her husband, Martin, as a teenager. He was the love of her life. She called him &#8220;My Martin&#8221; or &#8220;Martine&#8221;. They were married (eloped, though her parents were happy) on August 17, 1942 in Florence, South Carolina where he was stationed in the Army prior to going over seas for four years. Lily was by then working in Philadelphia, PA for Signal Corps (1942-1945), an emergency war service Military Organization during WWII.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #808080; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">When Martin returned in 1945 they settled into a house in Germantown, PA where Mary Martha and Martin John were born (named after grandparents). In 1950 the family moved to Gibbsboro, NJ. Here Lily and Marty bought a Texaco Station\/home they called &#8220;Marty&#8217;s&#8221; and settled in. Lily&#8217;s accounting background helped with the business aspect. However, she also made and sold sandwiches. She was especially known for her hoagies. In 1968 they moved into their promised dream home at 107 United States Ave., Gibbsboro, NJ. This was the last residence for both.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #808080; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Lily was very active with the elementary school in Gibbsboro. She substituted, began the library, was on the Brd. of Education and the PTA . She became a member of Holy Communion Lutheran Church in Berlin, NJ in 1950 where she taught Sunday School, was active in the Women&#8217;s groups, and was always avaiilable to help where needed. During the 1950s both Kristen and Kevin were born.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #808080; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In the 1960&#8217;s Lily decided to go back into her original field of secretarial and accounting work. She enrolled in Camden County Community College to enhance her secretarial and accounting skills. Continuing into the 1970&#8217;s she then enrolled in Glassboro College for School Law. During the next 35 years or so she worked in her fields at Eastern High School (general office manager for Principal Wm. Wert 1965-1970), Sterling High School (assistant\/bookkeeping to BOE Secretaries E. Davies and Wm. Asterino 1970-1979), and the Pine Hill Schools ( BOE Secretary and school payroll accounts1979-1981). Lily then changed into the real estate field with her skills for Maffucci Realty, Inc.of Cherry Hill, NJ in charge of all accounting responsibilites. After five years she switched to Sieh Realty also in Cherry Hill where she remained until she had to retire due to Martin&#8217;s health in 1996.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #808080; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">During Lily&#8217;s life time she and Martin raised four children, enjoyed their grandchildren and did a little traveling. Martin convinced Lily to visit Europe to retrace some of his WWII sites, to find his family in Slovenia, and to visit with her family in Fiave, Italy. He also took the Rotary International flags with them to share as she too was a Rotary Ann. The year was 1982. Lily feared flying but she did it. In 1986 they flew to Yokosuka, Japan to be there for the arrival of their grandson, Quintin. She returned to both Slovenia and Italy to visit family after Martin&#8217;s death. That was the last time she flew! When the children were young, and later in life,they traveled the east coast to many historical sites and famous cities or Veteran and Rotary events, by car. Lily had motion sickness!<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #808080; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">For their 50th wedding anniversary Lily planned the entire event. It was held at the Philadelphia Naval Base. She said it was the wedding reception they never had due to WWII and she wanted no surprises. She and Martin danced the polka, the dance they loved and were famous for at the Berlin Rotary events. She truly enjoyed seeing all the family and friends she had grown to love and sharing her celebration with them.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #808080; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Lily was known as a caring person. She helped many families and friends giving clothing, food, shelter, rides and advice as needed. However, only those receiving knew, she kept their personal situations private. She was very intelligent, funny, caring, opinionated, religious, patriotic, hard working, devoted to her family, a good friend and yet only five foot two (so she said). Unfortunately a stroke on April 8, 2008, after having raked the yard the day before, changed everything. She entered first the Lutheran Home in Morrestown,NJ and then St. Mary&#8217;s Catholic Home in Cherry Hill, NJ to wonderful care.There she spoke Italian occasionally, much to everyone&#8217;s surprise, especially her children. She left St. Mary&#8217;s on February 24, 2016, the morning she passed away.The last personal change in her life had been to return to the Roman Catholic Church after Martin died. She had prayed the Rosary her whole life, so the completion of her religious circle ended at St. Andrews Church, Gibbsboro, NJ on February 29, 2016 with the blessings of Father Michael Rush, her
